Kalagadi Manganese is a project that's on the lips of the whole mining community at the moment.

An ambitious development in a harsh and sparsely populated Northern Cape.

In a time that brings uncertainty to the mining industry, Kalagadi Manganese continue to see their buildings raised and shafts sunk.

It stands tall, in the near desert sun, as a beacon to entrepreneurial spirit and South African resilience.

It's the largest project of its kind to be launched in South Africa in the last 30 years and it's also the first to be started from scratch, to be developed into a mine, a sinter plant and a smelter by women.

Breaking new ground in the Manganese industry and situated strategically on a part of one of the largest manganese ore belts in the world, Kalagadi Manganese will not only bring international wealth to the country, but also see it stay within our shores.

THE UMTU SHAFT

Situated on the Umtu farm, the main and ventilation shafts continue to progress in their development. Both the sinking of the shaft and the development of the infrastructure above ground, are being optimised for delivery in the shortest timeframe, while still ensuring the safety and quality of the civil work.

Civil Works

The building structures for the change house, mine stores and workshop are now completed.

Underground Development

• The Ventilation Shaft has reached shaft bottom
• The Main Shaft is currently at production level (317 metres)
• The Main and Ventilation Shaft are connected by the horizontal
• development
• The list of underground equipment has been concluded and the
• procurement is progressing

THE SINTER PLANT

• Taking a raw manganese ore product and sintering it into a higher grade, will increase the value of the product when it goes to market. The Kalagadi Manganese Sinter Plant is rapidly taking shape. Overall the Sinter Plant progress is at 53%, while engineering is more than 85% complete.
• 70%of the sinter plant civil work has already been completed
• 834 of the 1200 piles for the Ore Preparation Plant are ready
• The northern ramp has been cast
• The MCC building's 3rd floor slab has been cast
• The Rod Mill and ESP foundations have now been handed over
• The architectural finishing has been started on the transformer bays
• The small plant building earthworks have begun

BULK INFRASTRUCTURE

Rail link

Kalagadi Manganese has secured the infrastructure to transport the sintered manganese to the smelter in Coega. Already plans are underway to link the mine to the existing rail line.

Water Pipe

A water pipeline from the Vaal Gamagara will follow the rail line into the mine. Already the contract has been signed for the supply of water, as well as future upgrades to ensure consistency in pressure and volume.
